Are you Bearing Fruit?

Bearing Fruit as a Disciple of Christ

The word disciple is associated with a student leading a lifestyle as taught by their teacher. Strong’s concordance defines it as a learner, a pupil. Here’s how Jesus defined it. In John 15:8 He said, “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.” (KJV)
The Father is glorified if we bear much fruit. Scripture identifies different kinds of fruit: the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control. The fruit of the womb represents children while the fruit of the hands represents work and actions. There are also the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ.
In verses 1 & 2 of the same chapter, Jesus talks about being the vine. The Father is the husbandman while the believers are the branches. Branches bear fruit but this only happens if they are connected to the vine. Jesus in verse 4 explains this by saying that we can only bear fruit if we abide in Him.
To abide means to stay, continue, and dwell. Therefore, to abide in Christ, means getting His word inside us and living by it. As we grow in Him, we ought not to give up when trials and other distractions come our way. As explained in the parable of the sower in Mark 4:3-20, only those that hear the word and receive it, bring forth fruit, some 30, 60 and 100 fold. When we let the word of God work in our lives, we see what He does. He brings change and that is fruit. It glorifies God and we can say that we are His disciples.
