Where Is Your Faith?

Where is your Faith?

We are a fortunate generation! Unlike other generations, when it comes to entertainment, we have much to choose from. Unfortunately, what seems to trend is not God friendly and believers are forced to vet what they watch!
Secular service providers control a big chunk of the entertainment market. Their content on a whole zooms in on man’s chaotic side. This content is available 24/7 and unfortunately it does affect the way people think. For instance, we find ourselves chatting more about what the politician said or did; the trending soap operas; the enviable lifestyles of the actors and actresses etc. From the Bible we learn that “Faith comes by hearing and hearing the word” Hebrews 10:17. What we hear on a regular basis affects our faith. When we regularly watch content that does little to build our faith in Christ, we are allowing unbelief to creep in our hearts and mind. The end effect is that we find ourselves struggling to even read God’s word for a short time.
“Finally….whatsoever things are just, pure…lovely…good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” Philippians 4:8 is advice from Paul that informs us on things that we should think on. How is this connected to what we watch for entertainment purposes? Our thoughts are influenced by what we hear. What we watch is composed of words, and words either build our faith or affect it negatively. This verse is certainly is a good rule of thumb to use to help gauge what you want to watch.
The Roman Empire had a state organized entertainment program. However they had become shockingly violent. Historians say that this was one of the reasons that led to its downfall. While our entertainment has not sunk to that low level, what is on TV and movies is closely similar to the violence in the Roman Empire. As believers we need to mind what we watch: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he…”
Proverbs 23:7.
